PHD Virtual Backup & Replication for VMware vSphere helps you:

  • Backup and restore faster to meet RPO and RTO requirements
  • Reduce backup storage over 90% and optimize network based backup
  • Efficiently Replicate virtual machines for disaster recovery
  • Integrate management of backup and recovery into vSphere client
  • Eliminate separate servers, hardware, agents or additional software from your backup and recovery solution

PHD Virtual Backup for VMware vSphere is built on the next generation of PHD’s award winning VBA™ (Virtual Backup Appliance) Architecture providing virtualized backup and recovery of large-scale VMware environments with direct management integration through vSphere client.

Purpose-built for virtualization, the PHD VBA architecture enables backup and recovery to be deployed as a virtualized workload directly on the VMware platform. This evolutionary approach enables high-performance data protection that seamlessly scales for large and distributed deployments.  Unlike alternative solutions, PHD Virtual Backup removes the need to deploy and manage a separate physical server, additional software, scripts or agents for backup and recovery of the virtual environment.

Key Features and Benefits

Unparalleled Backup and Recovery Performance - New in v5.3

A new optimized I/O engine provides the fastest backup and restore processing performance with the ability to leverage multiple vCPU's for efficient processing and increased scalability.  Each VBA can process multiple concurrent data streams (up to 4 streams in PRO edition, up to 8 streams in Enterprise Edition).

Virtual Machine Replication - New in v5.3

Replicate virtual machines easily and efficiently to a secondary site for effective DR.  VM's are replicated from your existing backups with no additional snapshots required. Intelligent Data Replication ensures efficient data transfer leveraging CBT, deduplication and compression technologies.  A built-in Test Mode enables verification of replicated VM's.

Open Export and Open Restore - New in v5.3

Open Export provides export of backups to standard compressed OVF format.  OpenRestore™ gives you the ability to restore backups directly to a VMware host without installing PHD Virtual software.

Easier and Faster Tape Backup Support - New in v5.3

Open Export enables export of backups to standard compressed OVF enabling faster backup and easier recovery from tape and other long term storage media.

Mass Restore of Virtual Machines - New in v5.3

Mass restore enables you to get back up and running quickly when a DR event occurs.  Multiple VM's can be restored from a single restore job, removing the need to restore VM's one by one.

vSphere Client Management Integration

The vSphere client plug-in included with PHD Virtual Backup provides “single pane of glass” management of virtual machine backup and restore directly from the vSphere client management console. A simple right-click in vSphere client allows you to start the VM backup and restore wizards and view job status, history and backup schedules through the PHD Console

Simple to Deploy & Easy to Use

Setup is as simple as deploying the virtual backup appliance, configuring the backup target and installing the PHD Virtual Backup plug-in.  Backup and restore job configuration is done through simple and intuitive wizards.

TrueDedupe™ Technology

PHD’s patent pending technology featuring source side data de-duplication and compression. De-duplication and compression occur before data leaves the host reducing network and target storage requirements and increasing the overall speed of processing backup jobs. PHD’s TrueDedupe technology provides an average dedupe ratio up to 25:1 reducing average data storage requirements for backups by more than 90%.

TrueRestore™ Technology

Provides increased confidence in your ability to restore from backup. Data is checked both during the backup and restore processes ensuring data integrity. Self-healing is provided by automatically detecting and repairing corrupt data blocks.

Multiple Data Streams for Fast Backup and Restore

Multiple concurrent backup and restore streams enable you to meet your backup window, RPO and RTO requirements.  Backup and restore streams are user configurable from 1-4 streams per VBA™.

Flexible Backup Storage Options

Backup virtual machines to locally attached storage or external storage locations via NFS or SMB/CIFS share.

Set It and Forget It Job Scheduling

Backup jobs can be assigned to defined containers (representing hosts, resource pools, folders…).  Any VM in a container or later added to a container will automatically be backed up based on job settings.  For flexibility, specific VM’s in a container can be set to be excluded from backups.

Instant File Level Recovery (FLR) Any OS, Any File System

Quickly recover individual files and folders directly from backup storage without the need to restore the entire virtual machine image.

Application Object Level Recovery

Use native tools to quickly restore application objects from any application including SQL and Exchange (database object, mailbox, mail message, etc.) directly from backup storage without interrupting production systems and without requiring additional hardware or virtual labs.

Supports Tape Backup Solutions

Backup Data Connector enables quick and easy integration with tape backup solutions.

Backup Retention and Archiving

Define and configure flexible retention policies for storing VM backups.  Flexible trim options can automatically remove old backups based on customizable policies.  Archiving provides the ability to mark specific backups for archive to exclude them from being deleted by the retention policy. Archive can be set at the job level for increased flexibility.

Fault Tolerant Deployment

Distributed architecture minimizes single point of failure. Multiple VBA’s can be configured to support backup across large environments.

Additional Feature Highlights

  • Support for Changed Block Tracking (CBT)
  • Export Virtual Machine Backup
  • Application Consistent Backup using VSS
  • E-mail notification
  • Support for Thin Provisioned Disks
  • Backup Storage Warnings
  • Distributed Virtual Switch Support
  • Supports all Operating Systems supported by VMware vSphere
